Women in Decision-Making: Partnership for Gender Equality
As part of the global campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”, #NationalAssociationofMunicipalitiesofAlbania held today an activity dedicated to the empowerment of women in local government leadership in Albania.
This initiative aims to create a sustainable platform for cooperation between women mayors and city council presidents, to:
Increase cooperation among local leaders
Advance policymaking with a gender perspective
Strengthen actions against gender-based violence
Use the Gender Barometer for evidence-based policies
The meeting sessions focused on new legal developments on gender equality, the findings of the Gender Equality Barometer in local government, good practices of municipalities, and the promotion of synchronized actions within the framework of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
The Executive Director of SHKBSH, Ms. Adelina Farrici, underlined the importance of this initiative becoming a permanent cooperation mechanism, which guarantees that the voice of women in local government is heard more strongly, their influence is increased and local decision-making is more representative and inclusive throughout the country.
In her welcoming remarks, we had the pleasure of listening to Ms. @Sabine Piccard, Head of Governance and Health at the Embassy of Switzerland in Albania, who emphasized the continued support for local government and efforts for gender equality.
Also, Ms. Majlinda Bufi, Chair of the Network of Women Chairwomen, shared the importance of this network as a mechanism that gives more voice to women in local government.
Ms. @Megi Fino, Chair of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Tirana, brought the perspective of the role of women in decision-making councils and the need to increase their representation.
Meanwhile, Ms. @Denisa Qehajaj, Vice President of the Kavajë Municipality Council, spoke about the challenges and opportunities of increasing the role of women in local decision-making.
We gratefully thank all the leaders who shared their experiences, ideas and commitment to strengthening women’s leadership in local government.
This activity was supported by the “Strong Municipalities” project of the @Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC and the Embassy of Sweden in Tirana, and implemented by Helvetas.
