The new municipality borders the municipality of Fier to the north and west, the municipalities of Selenica and Memaliaj to the south, the municipalities of Poliçan and Berat to the east, and the municipalities of Patos and Fier to the north. The capital of the municipality is the city of Ballsh. According to the 2011 Census, the new municipality has a population of 27,062 inhabitants, while the civil registry shows 43,033 inhabitants. The area of the new municipality is 329.19 km2 and the population density is 130.72 inhabitants per km2. This municipality consists of 9 administrative units. The new municipality has one city and 41 villages under its administration. The Mallakastra area is hilly with a prevailing altitude of 200-300 meters above sea level, while the highest point of the province is the peak of Shëndëllija at 712 meters. Mallakastra is an important area of the oil extraction and processing industry, as well as an agricultural and livestock area with a focus on fruit trees such as olives, cherries, pears and figs. The Ballshi Refinery is the main economic activity of the area with several hundred employees. The new municipality of Mallakastra will be almost entirely a rural area as the only city is Ballshi.
