Memaliaj borders the municipality of Mallakstër to the north, the municipality of Këlcyrë to the east, the municipality of Tepelena to the south, and the municipalities of Himara and Selenica to the west. The capital of the municipality is the city of Memaliaj. According to the 2011 Census, the municipality has a population of 10,657 inhabitants. Meanwhile, according to the Civil Registry, this municipality has 21,476 inhabitants. The new municipality covers an area of ​​372.07 km2 with a density of 78.90 inhabitants/km2. This municipality consists of 6 administrative units. The new municipality has one city and 53 villages under its administration. The town, known for years for its coal mine, has lost this profile over time due to its closure. The new area that is being created with the administrative unit lies mainly along the Vjosa River. It will prioritize agriculture and livestock farming as well as the development of small commercial services for the urban population. Other sources of income, in addition to agriculture and livestock farming, may also come from viticulture, medicinal plant collection, river tourism, historical and cultural tourism.
