Sustainable urban mobility

Sustainable mobility refers to transport methods that are environmentally responsible, economically viable and socially inclusive. It encompasses a range of practices and technologies designed to reduce the environmental impact of transport, improve accessibility for all and support the sustainable development of urban and rural areas alike. Sustainable mobility involves the integration of public transport systems, the promotion of non-motorised transport, the adoption of cleaner vehicle technologies and the implementation of policies that prioritise citizen engagement and the use of sustainable modes of transport. Various transnational calls and tenders under IPA funds can help municipalities and regions allocate resources to different sustainable mobility measures. Sustainable mobility initiatives and implementations are guided by several key goals and objectives of activities in sustainable mobility, such as:

Reducing carbon emissions: One of the main objectives is to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. This will be achieved by encouraging the use of public transport, cycling, walking and the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles. By reducing the region’s carbon footprint, we aim to contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.

Improving public health: Sustainable mobility is closely linked to public health. By promoting active modes of transport such as walking and cycling, and reducing air pollution through cleaner transport options, the initiative seeks to improve the overall health and well-being of the population. Cleaner air, reduced noise pollution and safer roads are critical components of this goal.

Improving access and inclusion: A sustainable transport system must be accessible to all, including the elderly, people with disabilities and those living in remote or underserved areas. The initiative aims to create a transport network that is inclusive, ensuring that all individuals have access to reliable and affordable mobility options.

Promoting economic growth and innovation: Sustainable mobility is not just about protecting the environment; it is also about fostering economic development. By investing in modern transport infrastructure and services, the initiative will help stimulate economic growth, create jobs and encourage innovation in the region’s transport and technology sectors.

Building resilient communities: The initiative recognises the importance of resilience in the face of global challenges such as climate change, economic instability and social inequality. By developing a sustainable transport system, the Western Balkans can build stronger, more resilient communities that are better equipped to address these challenges.

The project was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the European Union (EU), and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
