The municipality of Selenica borders the municipality of Fier to the north, the municipalities of Mallakastër, Tepelenë and Memaliaj to the east, the municipality of Himara to the south and the municipality of Vlorë to the west. The capital of the municipality is the city of Selenica. According to the 2011 Census, the area of ​​the new municipality of Selenica has a population of 18,476 inhabitants, while the Civil Registry results in 35,793 inhabitants. The new municipality has an area of ​​561.24 km2. and a population density of 63.77 inhabitants/km2. This municipality consists of 6 administrative units. The new municipality has under its administration one city and 47 villages. The new municipality of Selenica lies in a hilly area on the left bank of the Vjosa River and along the Shushicë River, which is a tributary of the Vjosa. The new municipality has on its territory the historic bitumen mine in Selenica, which also employs residents of the surrounding villages, as well as the oil-bearing area of ​​Wallachia. Agriculture and livestock farming are the main economic activities of the new municipality, whose population is particularly based on remittances from emigration.
