Tepelena borders the municipality of Memaliaj to the north, the municipality of Këlcyrë to the east, the municipality of Gjirokastër to the south and the municipalities of Himarë and Selenica to the west. The capital of the Municipality is the city of Tepelena. According to the 2011 Census, the municipality has a population of 8,949 inhabitants. Meanwhile, according to the Civil Registry, this municipality has 16,371 inhabitants. The new municipality covers an area of ​​431.24 km2 with a density of 37.96 inhabitants/km2. This municipality consists of 4 administrative units. The new municipality has under its administration one city and 24 villages. The Municipality of Tepelena is expanding with several rural areas, which are mainly engaged in livestock farming. Small commercial services and the collection of medicinal plants provide little income for families. One of the most important projects is that of the city center of Tepelena, where the revitalization of the Ali Pasha castle is also aimed at promoting tourism. This castle, but also other assets such as the Bënça canyon, the Beçisht bridge or the Cold Water can serve to promote cultural and natural tourism.
